At the military memorial service in the Lyric Theatre next Sunday afternoon, the Rev. F. S. Brown will give his experiences whilst in German New Guinea.
A meeting of the Second Division League will be held in the Lyric Theatre supper-room on Tuesday next, when the delegate's report will be received.
A social will be held under the auspices of the A. and P. Association in the A9ricultural Hall \on Thursday, 6th. June, good floor, excellent music, etc.
On Wednesday, June sth, a big sale of household furniture and effects will be held at Mrs McG-arvey's residence Helensville.
At the Red Cross social in the Star Theatre this evening, the opportunity will be taken of giving Private A. McMillan, of the locomotive staff, a send-off. He leaves with the 39th. Reinforcements, and is now on final leave. An open invitation to attend is extended to all returned soldiers.
Mr W. H. Hutchinson, formerly editor of this paper, has resigned from his position under the Board of Education as teacher at the Victoria Valley school, Mangonui County. At the Government's request, this gentleman has accepted the position of native schooi teacher at Lake Taupo.
The pay and allowances to our soldiers joining the Expeditionary Force, is far ahead of Great Britain, Canada, or Australia. Here a married man with five children is allowed £5 8s 6d per week, whilst in Australia he would re - ceive only £3 12s lid.
Quite a number of vessels are now laid up, berthed alongside the old timber wharf. The Breta Tui is waiting to go on the Auckland-Whangarei coal trade, while the Wairua and Naumai are idle owing to slackness of trade, which we hope will soon revive. The Town Board has started kerbing and channelling in Commercial Road, and not before it is wanted. The kerbing is made of concrete blocks as time permits. When once the job is finished there will be no more cleaning out and weeding of watercourses. Next, please —A few lights, i 'A grand Red Crosa social will be held in the Star Theatre on Thursday (tonight), when the winners of the apple guessing competition, etc., will be announced. Hundreds of tickets have been sold, and gr«at interest has also been evinced in the window-dressing event. All the displays are very creditable, and it is a hard matter to guess the winner. About twenty-five members of the Helensville railway staff gathered together on Monday evening last at the Central House to bid farewell to one of their comrades, Private A. McMillan, prior to his departure with the 39th Reinforcements. Mr A. Hammond occupied the chair, and in an eloquent speech presented the guest with a wristlet watch, as a mark of esteem from his fellow-workman. Private McMillan feelingly responded. A number af toasts were duly honoured, and the following contributed towards the enjoyment of the evening :—Mrs Millan ; Messrs A. Hammond, Morrison, Larsen, Hitchens, Sturgeon, R. Smith, and J. Simpson.
