ANZAC DAY.
OBSERVANCE IN HELENSVILLE. ANZAC' DAY, April 25th, was observed in Helensville as a halfholiday, and a commemoration service was held in the Lyric Theatre in the evening. There was -'a large and representative attendance. On the platform m were Mr J. F. Lambert (Chair- " man of the Town Board), the Revs. A. V. Venables, and L. J. Hodson, Mr Skelton, and Private F. Oswald (a returned Anzac). The Chairman read a letter from the Prime Minister, Hon. W. F. Massey, appointing April 25th as Anzac Day and asking that services be held in all places throughout the Dominion ; after which he gave a short address, and apologised for the absence of the Methodist Minister, Rev. J. Broom, as that gentleman was conducting an Anzac service at Kaukapakapa. The service opened with the singing of a hymn, and prayer by Mr Skelton. The Rev. A. V. Venables then read the 15th chapter of St. Paul's Espistle to the Corinthians, after which the Rev. L. J. Hodson gave a very able and stirring address, showing the reason for Anzac Day, and traversing the course of the war from the beginning. The hymn, " O God our Help in Ages Past." was then sung, and the Rev. Venables pronounced the benediction. A sbort musical programme was gone _ through, including items by Mr D. Rennie and Rev. Venables, and closed with the National Anthem. A collection for the Red Cross . Fund, taken at the door, amounted to £4 2s 3d. Mr Aitkenhead proposed a vote of thanks to the Chairman, and'also to Rev. Hodson for his able address. Mr Lambert suitably replied.
