THE STAR THEATRE
—Saturday— One of the most; attractive photoplays in which dainty Mabel Taliaferro has yet bsen seen is " The Barricade," in which she has the part of Hope Merrill, a brilliant society girl. . Her father, who has been speculating with money belonging to his firm, tells his daughter that John Cook, a young millioniare, has ruined him. She plots to wreck Cook's life. She wins his love and marries .him. Then she tells him she does not love him and thus she builds up a barricade in their own home. Taking advantage of her position as Cook's wife, she. learns the secrets of his business, and so manipulates his affairs that she gains control of his fortune. At last, with her husband absolutely in her power, she learns he was not responsible for her father's ruin — that he is an honorable man who loves her deeply. How the barricade in their home then is broken down forms the biggeat scene in the play. —Wednesday— "The Conquest of Canaan," featuring Edith Taliaferro and Jack Sherrill, is a splendid dramatization of Booth Tark- i ington's adventurous romance. Joe ! | Pouden who lives in the' village of Canaan is in bad odour with the inhabitants. The only exception is Ariel Tabor the grandaugher of a poor artist. Her uncle is rich, but threatens to disinherit her if she continues to be friendly with Joe. She refuses to turn her pal down. Before her uncle can carry out his threat' he dies, and Arial and her grandfather go to Paris. Joe Pouden with the assistance of a hotelkeeper* leaves the village and goes to New York where he goes through a law school. He returns to Canaan as a lawyer, and determines to live down his unpopularity. He still has the old battle to fight' Arial also returns. Then events crowd thiick and fast, and the story of how he conquers Canaan and becomes their idol is more than interesting.
