RED CROSS EFFORT.
AT PARAKAI.
ON Tuesday evening, Ist inst., there was a very successful function at Hinemoa House, Parakai, which resulted in the satisfactory sura of £14 being raised' for the Red Cross Fund, this amount being contributed by the proprietors and guests of the various boarding houses and residents of the district. Sister Maysie, a Red Cross nurse and sister of the late Dr. Barnado, gave a lecture on *'A Nurse's Experience on Battlefields." Mr T. W. Jones presided, at the lecture, and indeed took a | very active part in arranging the*! programme.
Mr Gardiner, of the Bank of New Zealand, was elected hon. treasurer.
Miss Adams, Mr and Mrs Rennie, Miss Pragnal and Mr Livingstone contributed musical items, which were greatly appreciated. . „
Mrs Nield kindly lent her large billiard hall for the occasion and there were about 125 persons present. ■
The lecturess related her experiences on battlefields in South Africa and Europe, and gave a very interesting and' instructive address, pointing but improved treatment1 of the sick and wounded^sjn/e the Boer War. The audieriievi was greatly delighted and unanimously passed a vote of thanks to all who took part in the proceedings and to Mrs Nield for the ha] I, Mr F. G. Ewington moved tl>e vote of thanks and Mr Gardiner seconded it. The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close one of the most interesting and enjoyable meetings ever held in the Parakai district.
