A few evening dress suits for sale at Coulter's Mr J. Laking, of Onehunga, will preach at the Helensville Methodist Church on Sunday evening next. A dance will be held in the Parakai' Hall on Saturday evening next. Motor bus leaves Terminus Hotel at 7.30 p.m. A smart boy is wanted to learn the printing trade ; also girl to assist in housework at Springside House. Mr I. McLeod, who has a timber yard in Commercial Road, has an interesting notice in this issue. Mr W. F. Raisher has been appointed Returning Officer for the Mairetahi, Kaukapakapa, and Kumeu Ridings, for the forthcoming County Council election. Mr Jas. McLeod will address the ratepayers of the Mairetahi Riding in the Woodhill Hall on Tuesday, October 23, and at the Parakai Hall on Wednesday, October 24, at 8 p.m. Business at the patriotic stall outside the Star Theatre still continues to be brisk. On Friday night last everything on the table was sold, the takings amounting to £3 15s 3d. It has been decided to hold the Good Roads Committee Conference in Whangarei on Monday, 22nd October. Mr T. S. Houston and Colonel Bell are the Northern representatives. The Parakai Branch ,of the Women's Patriotic League are holding a social in the Parakai Hall on Saturday, 27th in3t. Songs, recitations, dancing, guessing competitions, etc., will be held. On 19th inst. a street collection will be made. Funds are for the Red Cross.
The Helensville Town Board office will be closed this (Thursday) afternoon, the Town Clerk, Mr W. F. Raisher having gone to Auckland to see his son off to camp with the 35th Reinforcements. Private Raisher directly he became of age volunteered his services and was accepted as fit.
It a great pity to see the two fine steamers belonging to the Kaipara Steamship Co., lying idle for such a long time, viz., s.s Wairua and s.s Otea ; but war brings many changes. The travelling public to p and from Dargaville greatly miss these two familiar steamers. Things used to be quite brisk at the Helensville Railway Wharf when the Company's fleet were alongside.
The Girls' Branch of the Navy League will give an entertainment in the Lyric Theatre, Helensville, on Monday, 22nd October (Labour Day). Half the proceeds go to the Helensville Women's Patriotic League and the other half to the Navy League. The Helensville ladies have kindly consented to accommodate the members' of the Company, and it is hoped that there will be a good attendance.
The send-off social to Private L. Downer (who was home on final leave), held in the Star Theatre on Friday evening last, was a decided success. Good music and a splendid floor are the main things that go towardsmaking an enjoyable evening, and on this occasion both were excellent. Messrs R. and J. Constable acquitted themselves well as Ms.C, and Miss Cullens presided at the piano. Mr E. T. Field, in a neat speech, presented the guest of the evening with the' usual shaving outfit and pair of socks. Light refreshments were supplied by the Ladies' Committee.
The 'Wairoa Bell, of October 15th, says : " The outlook for the butter season is at present none too bright, but we hope we shall soon see a way through. Mr Massey will meet delegates from the butter factories at Wellington' on Wednesday, when he will lay before them the new proposals of the Imperial Government, which are very different to the original proposals made by Mr Massey to the last conference. Mr T. Bassett, representing Northern Wairoa, left for the conference on Sunday, after a special meeting of the dairy directorate on Saturday.
