. A clearing sale of furniture and effects takes place at the residence of the late F. MacKenzie, Garfield Road, on Saturday afternoon next, commencing at 12 noon.
The Helenaville Post Office will reopen from 7 p.m, to 8.30 p.m., for the sale of War Loan Bonds and Certificates on Fridays, August 24th and 31st, and on Saturdays, August 25th and Ist September.
The Member for the Kaipara Electoral District, Captain J. Gordon Coates, who has been on active service since last October, has been awarded the Military Cross by the Commander-in-Chief for acts of gallantry in the field.
A very old and highly respected resident of Helensville, in the person of Mr David Donovan, passed away at his residence at about 7 o'clock this morning. He was 62 years of age, and had been ailing for some time. Great sympathy is felt for the bereaved family. The funeral will leave his late residence, First Avenue, Helensville, at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday next.
The Auckland Second Division League desire to form a branch in Helensville for the purpose of co-operating with those already established in other parts of New Zealand. An officer of the League, if necessary, will visit this district and address a public meeting to explain the aims, objects and methods of this body.
The tenth ballot to supply recruits for the Expeditionary Force will be drawn in Wellington this week, commencing on Tuesday last. There are between 14,000 and 15,000 names to be drawn, which will supply a double quota. The remaining 7000 to 8000 First Division men will be called up next month.
Proclamations are gazetted prohibiting the exportation from the Dominion, except with the consent of the Minister for Customs, of chemicals, drugs, and chemical preparations and scrap metal, and also of postage stamps to any other destination than the United Kingdom and British possessions and protectorates.
A quarter-acre section on Belle Vue Estate, belonging to Mr John P. Hand and donated by him to patriotic funds, was put up for auction at Buckland's sale yards yesterday. After some brisk bidding, Mr Hand (the donor) bought the section in for £10. It was put up again, and finally purchased by Mr Channon for £5. The Helensville and Parakai branch of the Women's Patriotic League will therefore benefit to .extent of £15.
