PATRIOTIC EVENING.

The Helensville Women's Patriotic League is to be congratulated on the success of the function held last Thursday evening in the Star Theatre, when nearly £44 was taken. This amount, minus £3 5s expenses, will go to swell the funds for comforts for ourboya in khaki.

Various forms of entertainment were provided, including the usual compel? tions. A source of great amusement was the surprise envelopes which brought in £14 108. For some days previously several young ladies had been busily engaged in conducting a campaign for a handsome mirror, and the lucky winner proved to be Mrs Nxeld, while the doll and ladies' bag were won by Miss Stancombe and Major Turley respectively. The sweet-stall, presided over by Miss Wikon, was tastefully arranged, and did a brisk trade in home-made sweets.
