FORTY YEARS AGO.
We extract the following items, "relating to this district, from the long-defunct newspaper, the Whangarei " Comet," printed in 1877 :—
HELENSVILLE. We are all anxiously expecting the arrival of Mr Carruthers, C.E., to determine the route of the Kaipara-railway. We have in all conscience had enough Ministerial lying about this important branch of railway, but if Mr Carruthers only pushes ahead we are a long suffer- -** irig and forgiving class of settlers, lanfliq^ the unhappy past will soon be -formUi gotten.
KAIPARA.
The resolutions passed at the1 late Native meeting held here are a determination to adhere- to the Christian religion and laws, to become one with the Europeans;! to give up murderers and thieves to^fie le^al tribunals, affirms the wrong of recognising claims to land by right of conquest, that the seat of Government ought to be at Auckland, that orphan children should be supported by the Government, that all legislative grievances be submitted to Parliament, and acknowledge the benefits derived from the Queen's Government.
