PRUNING TOMATOES;
Experiments at the Ruakura Government Farm with tomatoes to determine which system of pruning will give the best results —single or double—favour the latter method, more particularly with the vigorous-growing varieties. These ?when pruned to the single stems require constant pruning by means of pinching back side shoots forced out by the vigour of the plants. In regard to the quality of the fruit, it might be thought that the single stems would produce the better olass. This, however, is not the oase, no difference whatever being noticeable, One point in favour of the single-stem system is that the fruit will ripen seven or eight days earlier than on the double-stem method.
