EASTER CARNIVAL.

GALA DAY AT HELENSVILLE.

GLORIOUS weather prevailed on Easter Monday, 7th inst, when a most successful carnival and sports gathering, in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, was held in the Helensville Show Ground. The townspeople and settlers from the outlying districts turned out in great numbers, and there was also a good attendance of excursionists. The procession left the Railway Station a little later than the advertised time, headed by a Turkish Lancer and the Pipers ; then came the Highland National Reserve, the Kaipara Defence Corps, Senior Cadets, and pedestrians in fancy costumes, of which Farmer Hayseed and his wife were most conspicuous, causing a good deal of amuse* ment. A boat drawn by horses and.containing children in fancy custumes, brought up the rear. Mrs New gained first prize for the best turn-out in the procession (motor car with hospital nurses). Miss McDougall, 2nd (Scotland). Miss Wilson, 3rd (Belgium). Master E. Leach, 4th (Beefeater). The third and fourth prizes were kindly donated by Mrs Gunson. i The grounds had quite a picturesque appearance, with the nicely decorated stalls dotted here and there, all doing a fair business, the whole being enlivened by the stirring strains of the pipe band. During the afternoon Mrs Gunson (Mayoress of Auckland), after an appropriate speech on the good work performed by the Women's Patriotic League, presented the prizes to the winners. Mr Jas. McLeod asked for three cheers for Mrs Gunson, which was heartily responded to. He also added that thanks were due the Highlanders, who had rendered valuable aid in making the function a success. Owing to some misunderstanding the Helensyille Town Band did not play at all, which was a great pity, as the whole musical programme was left to the visiting Band, to whom many thanks as due, as they not only gave valuable time in coming up from Auckland gratis, but helped considerably to swell the gate takings. Great credit is due to the hardworking committee and secretaries for their untiring energy^ In carrying out the programme'" to a successful issue. Next week we will publish full details of the receipts and expenditure, but roughly speaking, there will be over £100 to the good.
