THE HELENSVILLE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
THE Secretary of the Helensville School Committee has received the following letter from the Minister for Education : — Minister's Office, Education Dept. Wellington, 14th March, 1917.. Dear Sir, —I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 12th inst., respecting the necessity for the establishment of a District High School at He lensville. In reply, I desire to inform you that I have noted the representations contained in your communication in support of the application, but would point out that I have no power to authorise the . establishment of such a school except on the advice of the Council of •'"jgfi Education. . Jliß The application will be referred to JpPIP the Council for consideration at its next statutory meeting in June, and I regret no further actton can be taken in the matter until the recommendation of .-, that body is received. —Yours faithfully, • r*' J. A. Hanan. In addition to the above com" munication from the Minister of Education, the School Committee has received the following from 'p the Auckland Education Board: — Auckland, 16th March, 1917. Sir, —I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated the 12th inst., urging that the District High School should be established immediately. In reply, I am directed to point out to you that Subsection 2 of Section 88 of the Act requires that the Minister shall refer applications for the establishment of District High Schools to the Council of Education. The next meeting of the Council of Education will be held in the month of June. There appears to be little chance of the District High School being established during the present year. It would be wise, therefore, for any of the pupils who can avail themselves of secondary education in Auckland to do so immediately. I have to add that, at the present time, owing to the enlistment of about 240 teachers for active service, there are no qualified teachers available to undertake secondary work.—l am, etc., R. Crowe, Secretary. It is a great pity that the Education Board did not explain the situation to the Committee, and so prevent, the disappointment caused by the delay.
