THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE." HELENSVILLE, THURSDAY, MARCH 15 1917 HELENSVILLE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
ON Friday, 9th inst., a meeting of the Helensville School Committee was held to consider the last communication from the Education Board in reference to the establishment of a District High School in Helensville. Although the Education Board is in favour of such a school being started, the Finance Committee of the Board has recommended its establishment; the Inspectors of the Board are satisfied of its necessity in view of the requirements of the district; and the Committee obtained and sent to the Board guarantees to attend from the requisite number of pupils to start the school before the end of the year; the Committee is now informed that no further steps can be taken before the next meeting of the Council of Education which takes in June.
A considerable amount of discussion took place, and it was felt that unless immediate action was taken the children of the district would suffer great injustice. The year before last representations were made of the urgent necessity for the establishment of such a school, and it was fully understqod that were a: sufficient number qf pupils guaranteed tfyere w.quld b,e no difficulty in the matter. Unfortunately th,e Oqrrimjttee wq,s not in time tq apprfse sufficient parents qf th.c necessity fqr the attendance qf § rnj.nirnum number of twenty pupils being guaranteed, and consequently the project was temporarilyshelved, with the understanding that sufficient guarantees would be procured to ensure the establishment of the school at the beginning of this year. This was done, and parents, relying on the assurances given, have held '"ba'c.k their children in anticipation of their being able to atten4 the school Ije.rel U/n----less secqnciary, edijcatiqn is provided before * further action is taken by the Council of Education in June, it would seem that those children who passed the proficiency examination, both last year and the year before, will be deprived of the higher education to which they are entitled. The Committee considers that the Education authorities are under an 'Obligation to " comply wijbfy" the Regulations w.hlch, if they have an^ n^ea^irjg^in^Vy a Pjrgnji^g tg |?^pijl^ th" q secondary educatiqn for which' the' children have <.iuaUq.ed s
In view of the above Gonsiderations, the Committee instructed the Secretary" to make an urgent appeal to the Minister of Education to do all possible towards the provision of secondary education for the children of the district; and, also, to write to the Education Board pointing out the disadvantages the' 'children &r6 url'dei 1, ahd ; requesting them to take itij mediate !ep^: !'
