FAREWELLING OUR BOYS
OF THE 24TH DRAFT
THE Star Theatre, Helensville, was uncomfortably crowded on Friday evening last, 2nd inst., when a farewell social was held in honour of Privates T. Haffordr J. Hafford, F. Devey, Mitchell, and J. McKenzei, who have been spending their final leave with their parents and friends. The Territorials, who are at present in camp in Heiensville, were largely represented, and added to the success of the function by contributing a number of items. Mrs Baker and Mr M. McGarvey also sang in good style. The Town Band turned out, and played for a number of dances, while Miss M. Cullens presided at the piano.
Lieut-Colonel T. H. Steadman, in a short speech, presented each of the departing soldiers, on behalf of the Heiensville public, with a pipe and safety razor. Private Devey Sacted as spokesman for his comrades, and suitably responded.
Light refreshments, of which there was a bountiful supply, were handed round. Mr W. Connelley acted as M.C., and kept the dancers busy until 1 a.m., when everyone wended their way homeward.
