KAUKAPAKAPA
[OWN CORRESPONDENT] TENNIS AND WAR, On Thursday last the tennis court was an attraction for many, It was the official opening of tennis for the season, and several were there with racquets and balls and shoes, But like all pleasure grounds just now, young men were sadly in the minority. Still we know where many of them are —no soldier man is forgotten. And while several were enjoying a little pleasure on the tennis court, several others were busy knitting, etc., for the soldiers. The ladies provided afternoon tea, and a collection was taken up for the Patriotic League. HARVESTING. _J Everybody is busy now; as the farmers' "extra" is upon them all. Glass harvesting is good this year, and most people will have some grass hay for next winter. Oats are being cut too, and the machines have something well worth reaping and binding this year. Farmers are all working ■ with some heart this year, for the crops are good. There is no caterpillar scare as there was last season. OUR ROAD ENGINEER. It is quite nice to see our member for this riding, and the County Council's road engineer moving about here in a motor car. This means more road contracts, and perhaps higher road rates, but we all welcome any interest that is shown in our "ways " out and in. ROAD WORK NOW ON. Just at Helensville's very door the Great North Road has been lying in disgrace for years,, but now it is being treated with modern methods, and men are busy on it. Thanks to someone for taking an interest in it; . and none should be more thankful than'our Helensville friend, both for their pleasure and business. TIMBER AND SETTLERS. A great deal of timber has been carted out fyom Kaukapakapa lately. Ancl new homes are being made in the district. We wish every success to all who settle here, and welcome, thrice welcome, to all who seek to make a home in our midst. FRUIT SEASON. Orchardists are all busy now, and every orchard looks well. No fruit tree, Mr Editor, need be ashamed of its name on the registration list. And by the look of things every tree is a good tree, and will bring forthMts -; good fruit this season.
