THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE." HELENSVILLE, THURSDAY, Dec. 14, 1916 THE FIRE BELLS ARE RINGING

(SOMETIMES.)

ANOTHER alarm of fire since our last issue puts the town on its metal as to the possible danger of heavy loss of property, and perhaps lives. It is an old saying, in country districts especially, that when a fire occurs there must be two more to follow, as three is the doomsday number required to complete the order of destiny. And so we are glad to announce that Helensville has had those three, an unannounced fire having occurred in a certain large building—up at the top end of the town again—when a boarder took his blazing mattress, and threw it out of the window thus probably saving the whole premises. Therefore, we can pretty well feel safe tor Christmas from further danger. At the same time, the authorities must be on the alert at once, in case of further mishaps. Helensville is now without a fire bell, the only one in existence having become. " cracked." Several of our local firemen reside quite a mile from the firebell stand opposite the Police Court, Helensville South, and it is imperative that they should all be warned in time —as well a the residents —of danger. Therefore it behoves our city fathers to "look around," and devise ways and means for procuring at least four alarms; nothing less will suffice, as the area requiring notification of fire is large and scattered, The public are always willing to help a " hard-up brigade," and already a picture show benefit is announced. But we require FOUR ALARMS, and at once! It is easy to place them.
