The popularity of tea as a war-time beverage is evidenced by the fact that during the past 12 months Great Britain has received 432,000,000 pounds, an increase of 30,000,000 pounds on previous year. Of this total the Army and Navy absorbed 21,750,000 pounds. Sensationalism holds sway in the Cines Company's feature photo-play, "The Daughter of Darkness," which is to be Shown at the Star Theatre on Saturday evening next. The story is slightly reminiscent of the exploits of the famous "Zigomar," except that in "The Daughter of Darkness " the principal character is a w«man, who is also young and pretty. The theme is exciting, and although beyond the bounds of feasibility, is none I the less entertaining. "The Broken Coin " (episode 4) is included in the programme. It is becoming more and.mo re | interesting and exciting. Among civil actions set down for N hearing before a judge arid jury of twelve at^the present sitting of the Auckland Supreme Court, the following actions are set down for hearing:—The Parenga Gum fields, Ltd. (Mr A.lderton), on the ground of alleged slander, is proceeding against A. E. Harding (Mr Nicholaon), and claiming £2000 damages, also against Robert Edward Hornblow, the proprietor of " Dargaville Times," (Mr Gribbin), a claim ,for £1000 for alleged libel.
