AT UPPER WAIWERA.

A iakgely attended service was held in the Hall at Upper Waiwera last Sunday at 2.30 p.m., in memory of the late Privates Thomas Hurley and James Jones. The roads were very bad in places, and the. weather was wintry and uncomfortable for traveN ling. But yet quite a hundred people or more assembled—some went from Silverdale, some from Wainui, and some from Wai^ era, etc. The Hall was beautifully decorated with white flowers, ferns, and flags. Everything was well arranged, and the local committee worked well, The church organ was removed from the school to the hall, and extra hymn books were provided. Well-known hymns were sung, and the singing was good —so sacred and impressive. Mrs Fitzum sang "He wipes the tear from every Eye." The Rev. Lamond conducted the service, and preached on the words "They rise "again." Many eyes were wet with tears of sympathy and love during the service for Upper * Waiwera'b loss in the death of two of their braye soldier boys, and yet the loyalty qf Upper Waiwera was well seen in th 6 way the people turned put, and especially in the work of the committee. A very nice innovation was, in tfye kindness of t'fle ladies, \n providing afternoon tea |or d,ißta.nt friends, and especially for military officers and men and returned and wounded soldiers. The singing of the Anthom ended a very irrprps^ve jand double memorial service. Roman Catholics and Protestants all joined together in this se.ryipe iy> worship, and in Chi istian. feUqwshjp «md sy m.pathy. The Minister, especially mentioned this fact, and urged thftt a\\ branches of our Christian religion wight keep up, this beautiful apmt o,f Church union for the saxe of ". pur boys at thefront'*
