Ultimatum to Greece—Fleet Taken by Allies—Three Italian Successes.
The Greek Government ha s accepted an allied ultimatum demanding that the fleet, an arsenal, and the northern railway should be handed over to the allies, who should also be given control of the harbour of Athens. The smaller ships of the Greek Navy will be given to the Provisional Government at Salonika, and the larger will be disarmed.
The Italians report successes on the Carso Plateau, south-east of Gorz, in
the Trentino, and in the Julian Alps, „ on the northern extremity of the Isonzo V front, where they pierced the enemy's * line.
The allies have captured the Bulgarians' first line on the heights west of Gieugelu, near the Greek frontier, The British have occupied two mora villages east of the Struina River, in Eastern Macedonia.
The total number of prisoners taken by the allies in the Somme region is 60,474, with 304 guns and. 1030 machine guns. The allied advance represents a gain of seven miles on a front of nine miles.
SATURDAY. Bulgarians in Retreat — Italians Nearing Trieste — Two Governments In Greece. Ihe Bulgarians have commenced the evacuation of tho Servian town of Monastir. They have the Bubuna Heights to fall back upon, but it is stated that here they will be exposed to the danger of envelopment.
The success of the Italians on the Carso Plateau has brought them within 13 nrilas of Trieste. The Austrian defences were broken on a ten-mile front. M. Yenizelos, the head of the Greek Provisional Government at Salonika, states that he will collect taxes and raise and equip troops to fight for the allies. The Roumanian need of support owing to the German concentration against .her has been stated in both the Roumanian and British Parliaments.
MONDAY. Advance on Trieste—Royalist Plot in Greece — Assistance for Roumania—Battle Expected in Macedonia. Austrian newspapers show increasing anxiety regarding the Italian advance over the Carso Plateau on Trieste. It is reported that Italian warships are being concentrated in the Northern Adriatic to assist in the attack on Trieste.
The principal fighting on the Somme front has been for the village of Ablaincourt. The Germans occupied portion of the village, but were im* mediately ejected.
Forty British and French aeroplanes dropped over four tons of bombs on the Mauser works at Oberndoi'f, Wurteraburg.
A great battle is expected to take place shortly on the Struma f runt, in Eastern Macedonia. The British are in touch with the Bulgarians on a front of 17 miles.
The fighting on the Transylvanian front continues to be of an even character. The Roumanians have had successes in passes leading to Kron~ stadt.
A .Royalist plot to attack the allies is given as the cause of the seizure of the Greek Fleet. It is stated that the King was concentrating troops in Thflssaly, and intended to join them there, hoping that the Germans would be able to break through, the allied line on the Greek frontier and join him in an attack on Salonika.
TUESDAY Dobrudja Fighting — Pressure in Transylvania — German Plan of Campaign — Allies to Help Roumania —French Capture of Priaioners. ' The situation in the Dobrudja is now stated to be in the allies' favour, but the pressure of the enemy in Transylvania continues to be formidable. Thft struggle in Transylvania is still fluctuating.
In a newspaper article Dr, Dillon, an experienced observer of the Near East, states that Germany is staking everything od maintaining her Balkan communications. Dr. Dillon says Bulgaria will undoubtedly be con quered, but it will take a long time.
Owing to the threatening situation on their own borders, Turkey and Buigaria are recalling such of their troops'as have been employed in Galicia and on the DvinsK front.
The British forces which crossed the Struma into Eastern Macedonia have the station ut Macedonia have the station at Seres, on the SalonikaConstantinople railway, under fire, and have put tl>e railway to the south pf Seres. Dominating Line of Hills—Germany's Summer Losses — Over 1,500,000 Casualties.
The French have penetrated the village of Sailly-Saillisel, three miles north-east of Combles, and occupied houses on the border of the Bapaume Road,
The capture of Schwaben and Stuff Redoubts, near Thiepval, was a notable feat, both were of the strongest description. The casualties in capturing Stuff Redoubt were only about one-third of the number of the prisoners taken.
A careful Swiss estimate of German losses during the past three months places them at over 1,500,000, of which 500,000 were sustained on the western front.
A correspondent at Roumanian headquarters lays emphasis on the extraordinary effort which the Germans are making to crush Koumania, and thus secure valuable oilfields and wheat iields. They have withdrawn troops from the north Russian front.
