A largely attended memorial service to the late Rifleman A. Mcßride, was held in the^Hall on Sunday, October Bth. Thp rain of the previous three days had made the roads in the out-districts very sloppy, and this prevented many people from attending. The Hall was tastefully decorated by the schoolmates of the deceased, with flowers and flags. Special hymns were rendered by the choir, and at the close of the service, the organist Mr Dyo, senr.) played jthe " Dead March." The Ber. J. A. Lamond in a forceful sermon drew a close analogy between the soldier's and the Christian's life; both etrivo for good against evil.
A Taranaki dairy farmer using but 78 acres, received £1250 for his last seasqn's, milk, and b,e b,as a homjs still tq come.
To enter's, fi.rst-.class smoking carriage and to find snqgly ensconced there a young lady who looks no more than twenty is nowadays not worthy of remark, says a Taranaki paper. But when, as on a New Plymouth train, the young lady brought forth a cigarette and smoked it, repeating the action again and again, the surprise of the men in the carriage, though not openly manifested, was very real.
