CONCRETE ON THE ROADS. « . CONCRETE FOR BRIDGES. Full Particulars of a Most Welcome Innovation, as supplied in a Pamphlet issued by Wilson's Portland Cement Co. Auckland. Hines, Chairman Board of County Road Commissioners, Wayne County, Michigan, before the National Conferense on Concrete Road Building, Chicago, 1914 :— When we begin woik ,on a road we begin in the winter by building our own tile for drainage purposes. Wayne County does all its own work, makes irs own tile, builds its own concrete roads and maintains and Iqoks after the county .roads in general. Usually in taking care of drainage we tile with 4-inch land tile along street car lines, and have an open ditch alongside of the road. When spring opens our scarifying is done behind a steam roller, our grading is done with a steam roller, our hauling is done with steam rollers and traction engines. We do not believe in putting men at work on anything that a machine will do as well, as cheaply, or as quickly, and we have worked out a number of little economies that improve the quality of the work and cut down the cost.

As soon as our drainage is cared for and our roadbed is prepared, we haul material to the job and pile it conveniently alongside of the road. We endeavour to pile our nateriai in such a manner that as our mixer backs up our supply of material will remain in easy reach.

Our roads are constructed from washed and screened gravel ranging in size" from -J to 1£ inches, and washed and screened sand. We are very. particular to have our aggregates free from clay, loam, and other foreign substances. We use gravel in the construction of.our loads because we have no other local stone available that is satisfactory. The limestone in > Wayne County is very soft, so we purchase gravel of the proper quality because we can buy it at a cheaper price than we can buy any other material.

When our materials are in place along the roadside, we set ou* side forms. At intervals or 25 feet we set in place the steel plates which we use to protect the pavement at the expansion joints. These plates are of soft steel about 3 inches in width and 3-16 of an inch in thickness, with shoar members, which extend out six inches on each side of the concrete. We utilise a rich mixture of concrete beoau.se we believe it pays to use plenty of cement j the f unotion of the peinent Is to aot as a binder. The mi* we use is nominally 1: l£; 3. In reality, the mix is I*3, with sufficient sand to fill the voids— about 7 pet cent- or 8 ppr cent plus. We use a wet mixture, and in mixing we specify th^t the poncrete sjhall be turned, about §0 qr 55 seponds. We ha.ye made some few tests on turning the ini^er, 4, 8, 12, 16,, 2Q, 24, 2§ and 32 revolutions, and we find that the average from the revolutions at 16 over those at 12 to 28 shows an increase in strength of about 25, per gep^-
