A BUSINESS PROPOSITION

TO THE EDITOR

Sir, —Your very appropriate remarks re the improvements to the town, and your recommendation to the incoming Town Board to see that our little town is brought up-to-date as one of the leading health resorts of the Dominion, are highly appreciated. But I would suggest that the uncongenial, filthy and unsightly creek running across Bridge Street should be the first matter taken in hand. It is said that an Invercargill man is known by his corkscrew, and 80 it will be that an inhabitant of the Bridge Street region will be known by the distinguished odour he exhales (as he walks about) unknown to himself. I understand that all tidal lands are controlled by the Marine Department of the Government, and if so, it would be an easy matter to get the area vested in the Board as an endowment, and then fill in from the mouth to a distance above the bridge. The material for filfing would be about 1200 yards to the chain. The Railway Department, no doubt, would loan trucks for the purpose, and also spare rails to «lay a line along the bank for the expeditious unloading of the t rucks. The whole cost would be trifling as compared with the benefits, and, moreover, the Board would acquire a valuable freehold property in a most important part of the township. The lower portion up to the railway boundary could be filled and given to that Department in consideration of the loan and haulage of material. This, I consider to be a good business proposition, and worthy of the immediate consideration of the new Board. The water could be diverted by culverts and drains to the river the same as the sewerage outlet is.—l am, etc.,
