FRIDAY. Allied Successes — Fighting at Guinchy — Austrian Retreat at Halicz—Zeppelin Disabled. 'Severe fighting is in progress about Guinchy, on the British front in the Somme region. Otherwise there has been only artillery activity north of the rirer. The French are maintaining the offensive south of the Somme, and have made further progress. The major portion of Berny-en-Santerre has been carried. The whole of the Dobrudja frontier is now held by the Russians and ;_"p.T?~ ~>anians. "ll^ Austrians admit that they have ; v'b'een pushed back by the Russians on the Halicz front. One of the Zeppelins which raided England on Sunday descended near . Mons, and was dismantled by the Germans. The Kaiser has dismissed General yon Deimling. who has been in command of the Crown Prince's right ■wing at Verdun. SATURDAY. Russians near Halicz — Battle in Dobrudja—Naval Bombardment of Kavala — German African Ports Surrender. The Russians are rapidly closing ~on Halicz, in Eastern Galicia. The . town itself has been bombarded and set on fire. The withdrawal of Austrian troops in northern Transylvania, in order to escape their threatened envelopment by the Roumanians is admitted by the enemy report. The Roumanians have experienced the first important reverse of their compaign by the loss of Tutrakan, a small town on the south»western border of Dodrutija. Great forces of Russians and Roumanians are concerting in this region. The French report states that south of the Somme the enemy has been reduced to impotence, and is unable to counter-attack. The French have -made further progress east of Deniecourt. Two ports of German East Africa have surrendered, under threat of naval bombardment. An allied fleet has driven the Bulgarians out of the Kavala forts, which have been re^occupied by Greeks. MONDAY, Russians in Servia—Balkan Railway Threatened — British Take Quinch — French Recoveries at Verdun.
" One of the surprises of the war " has heen given by reports "from Athens that the Kussians have captured Negotin, near the northeastern frontier of Servia. If ihis is true, it means that the Russians are within 60 miles of the main Sofia* Constantinople railway. By attacking on a front of 6000 yds the British completed the capture of Guinchy, in the Somrae r6gion. The French have captured a whole system of trenches between Fleury and Douaumont, on the Verdun front. They took many prisoners, and seized a large quantity of war material. Balkan reports do not confirm the Gei-man claim that 20,000 -Roumanians were captured at Tutrakan. The East African campaign is likely to end within two months, General Smuts having driven the enemy into an unexplored and feverstricken corner of the country. The Russians have driven the enemy to the west bauk of the Dvlna River, in the Dvmak region, and acrobs the Guita Lipa River, in Galicia. TUESDAY Varna Evacuated— Enemy Losses at Tutrakan—Western Gains Secure —German Attacks Repulsed— , -, Progress in Carpathians. /SA. cablegram from Petrograd states s :, ihSX the Bulgarians are evacuating Varna, their fortified port on the Black Sea coast. The latest reports show that for four days the Roucnanians at Tutrakan maintained a gallant defence. The enemy attacked in compact formations, and suffered extraordinary losses. - The fate o I the town i"as finally determined by the arrival of heavy enemy reinforcements. WEDNESDAY Progress in Balkans—British cross the Struma—Greek Cabinet Resigns—King's Decision Awaited. . A successful attacic has been made against the Bulgarians on the Struma front, in the Salonika theatre. In spite of strong opposition, British forces crossed the river and occupied several towns. The resignation of the Greek Ministry has been teudered to King Constantino, who has not yet announced his decision. The Austrians admit withdrawal of their forces in Northern Transylvania under the combined pressure of the Roumanian invasion and the Russian attacks in the Carpathians. A check has been givon to the enemy's offensive in the Dobrudja by the rapid advance of the Russians along the eastern coast, supported by the Black Sea Fleet, '
