THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE." HELENSVILLE, THURSDAY, Aug. 3, 1916 ANOTHER BLESSING FOR SOLDIERS.
OVERSEAS TOBACCO CLUB
IT must be a great blessing for our boys at the front to know that they are always being borne in mind by their friends and relatives at a distance, who are ever eager to provide all kinds of comforts for them. The Overseas Tobacco Club, which originated in London about twelve months ago, having the Duke of Connaught at its head, and Lord Korthcliffe as President, while amongst . the Vice-Presidency there are lords and dukes, and the Prime Ministers of Canada, Australia, .and NW Zealand, so that the management of the large manufactriring concern, the honesty of funds, and despatch of cigarettes, cigars and 'bacco is assured.
In June last the Club's total subscriptions amounted to £60,----005 13s 6d, while the amount of £50,695 2s 6d was paid out for tobacco and cigarettes sent to the front; there was then at Club and Bank (representing parcels in course of despatch) £9,310 2s 7d, and not a cent of deduction is made by the Overseas Club, which looks largely for generous support in the various Dominions and is getting that same, but the ball must be kept rolling, and our brave boys at the front be given a mede of comfort in smokes. One can scarcely comprehend how much all our generosity is appreciated by them when smoking in the trenches or in the snow and ice.
Due acknowledgement of £2 7s has recently been received by Messrs Stewart Bros., Ltd,, Helensville, and another list is now being prepared. This is in charge of the firm's Mr W. Allen, arid sums as low as one shilling are gladly accepted, and sums of 2s, 3s, and 4s appear to be the Club's general favourite. Special packages are ordered by many who subscribe for friends, but one is asked not to forget the friendless, and there are many, and the Club has a large contract on hand to see that none are neglected.
The manufacturing concern has hundreds of women and girls employed, and has machinery that turns out 20,000 cigarettes an hour. Last year the Club sent out 100 million cigarettes and half-a-million pounds of tobacco, and all concerned feel justly proud. We hope many amongst us will readily respond to the call, and contribute their little mite.
