DISTRICT NEWS
MAKARAU
[OWN CORRESPONDENT!
NO NEWS, GOOD NEWS— SOMETIMES.
I was just saying a few days ago that I must send a few j shillings and take out a proper subscription to your paper,, as I felt too guilty ; taking it all this time for nothing, and not sending you any local news. GONE AWAY TO FIGHT. The fact of the matter is, so many of our boys are at the front, and there is really nothing worth relating. No dances, no engagements, no marriages, or anything The people here are just jogging' quietly along. All have a nice lot of new grass ; the cows are coming into profit, and we are all prosperous, but happy we cannot be while this terrible war continues. PROSPECTING FOR ROADS. There are a great number of slips on the roads owing to the heavy rain, and I suppose there will be nothing to spend on them this year. There, that is all the news, and I'm sure you can do nothing with this. A MISSING LINK. I received the last paper, but not the one before that. If you have a copy would you send it ? I am rather interested in the piece by Mr Bottomley (I think it is), and would rather like to see the start of it. I also like to send the paper to my boy, who is now in France.
