HOW DOES GERMANY STAND NOW?
THE August issue of "Life," just published, was written, before either the great offensive began, or the full extent of the Jutland victory was realised, ye Dr. Fitchett was long-sighted enough to see the trend of events. In the current "Life " he summarises the position to date, and indicates almost exact ly the manner in which the fighting nations would enter this phase of the War. Dividing his review of the month's operations into half-a-dozen sections, Dr. Fitchett, in his usual highly picturesque manner, describes, first, the great Russian drive; next, the naval battla and its probable consequences; and, third, the puswle of Verdun. These special war articles make " Life " an invaluable guide to the busy man.
As a relief to the story of the fighting, Dr. Fitchett gives an amusing account of " How Germany Floats a Loan "; a selection of the best cartoons of the month ; and a number of extracts from such writers as lan Hay and Boyd Cable. Following these sections come two or three very notable special articles. Add "to these a stinging criticism of the Irish rebels by Bernard Shaw, a scorching article on " German Lies and Lying " by Owen Wister, and the reader has the best War magazine of the month.
The war naturally occupies ths? yraatest amount of rfjx-iec in '"Lite," but, on tiio other iiau-1. there are some vary fine features hi i!ii; yiartJeimir issue which ■i. .■.:•: c i.lio rea:p-r's mine!
