DEATH OF A RANGATIRA
A well-known and highly esteemed Maori woman, in the person of Gahimarae Kerei Mv, died at Otamatea settlement, Kaipara, on June 27th. She was a descendant of Arama Karaka Hautuki, one of the renowned chiefs of the Ngatiwhatua and Te Uri-ohau. Many natives from all parts of the district at bended the tangi, showing their great respect for deceesed. During the hui a committee was set up for the purpose of discussing the proposition re the erection of a suitable headstone or tablet to the memory of the late RevWm. Gittos, the pioneer Maori missionary. It was finally and unanimously decided that a subscription list be formulated towards that end, and that should sufficient money be raised, a headstone be erected at the Otamatea settlement, and a tablet in the Pitt Street Church, Auckland.
