HELENSVILLE'S MULLINGAR. WHEN the bay son of Marble Arch and Romola stepped into the ring at the sale held at Glenora Park in the summer of 1912, bidding was low. and Mr HenryNolan, the officiating auctioneer, had to wait quite a few minutes for a bid. When such came it was of a somewhat disheartening character, and when the bay colt was eventually knocked down, 60gns were the figures entered on the slate. At two years old Mullingar captured stake-money to the amount £870, and though he had to be thrown out of training in the summer of his three-year-old career, he won at that age in stakes £1170, while this season he has captured £1455. Mr J. Hand, of Helensville, has very good reason to rejoice over his purchase of Mullingar. Mullingar's victory in the Connolly Handicap at Wanganui on Thursday last, carried the meritorious stamp, for with Bst 51b opposite his name, and called upon ,to concede weight to noteworthy performers, he wa.s certainly not favoured in the matter of poundage. The account of the race shows that the son of Marble Arch was by no means favourably positioned when the last two furlongs came to be entered upon, but when the final demand was made upon the brown horse he was equal to reproducing that fine dashing run that he had displayed in several of his races, and a welldeserved victory went down to his credit-
