Wedding Bells
A VERY nice wedding was solemnised at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. L;Shanks on Thursday, May 25th. Miss Margaret 1 Shanks, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs 3 . L. Shanks, was the bride, and Mr F. W. Sylva, of Avondale, was the bridegroom. Some 50 guests assembled; the day was fine and calm, and the roads good. The Rev. J. A. Lamond was the officiating Minister. The bride looked nice in a silk dress, with the customarywreath and ye il, and carried a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The bridesmaids,. Miss Sylvia Shanks (sister of the bride) and. Miss Lilla Rus sell, also wore prettysilk dresses. Mr Allen Shanks (cousin of the bride) was best man, while Mr Keith Drinnan acted as groomsman. Mrs Sylva (mother of the bridegroom) was among the many guests present.. Two large tables were used for the' wedding breakfast,which bore evidence of the love of a father and mother for their daughter. Mr and Mrs Shanks spared nothing in order to make their daughter's wedding be long and pleasantly remembered. The health of the soldiers at the front was drunk, and the National Anthem sung. Then came the usual toast to bride and bridegroom, which was responded to'1 by the bridegroom.Mr F. Dye proposed'the health of the bride's father and mother, and said he knew Mr Shanks as a little boy, and that day again reminded him how quickly time moves on. Mr Shanks suitably replied. • Mr Holmes, Avondale, proposed the health of bridegroom's parents, who ' are widely known and we 11 respected at Avondale. Mr James Drinnan proposed the health of the bridesmaids. Mr: Connell, in a very humorous speech, proposed the health of the best man and groomsman. The presents were numerr ous and well-chosen. The bride's travelling dress whoa navy-blue costume, and amid showers of rice the happy, couple drove away to catch the train for '■ Auckland. ■
For Our Boys at the Front, v A number of patriotic and love-gifftn^t have again gone fmfcryQ^lkdfiMm§Patriotic Guild here. The ladies st^H keep up their sewing, etc., every Thursday afternoon for war purposes.
Welcome Visitor. ,0 Mrs Gunson, Mayoress of Auckland, will visit the Ladies' Guild'here on Thursday. We hope she will enjoy her visit. Our ladies will do their best to make Mrs Gunson feel how, much they appreciate the soldier boys' and their great sacrifice for the nation.
Farewell Service. •< A farewell Church service to Mr H. C; Henley was held in the Methodisi Church on Sunday evening last, Mr Henley is going into camp for training with the 17th Reinforcements. Mr arid Mrs Fewell, and Miss Fewell, with Mrs H.Bellini, sang two quartettes at the service. " Rock of Ages " was beautifully sung and impressive, and the Rev. Lamond preached an appropriate sermon. Mr Henley has been Society Steward in the Church for a long time.
Farmers' Holiday. It is interesting to see how the people are planning for annual rest and holiday. May those who go away for it, find much rest and pleasure, and those who cannot go may they have a double portion.
