THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE." HELENSVILLE, THURSDAY, May 18, 1916 NORTH AUCKLAND'S AEROPLANE.
The subscription list for the North Auckland Aeroplane, now lying at ihe office of the Echo by request of the local committee of which Mr C. G Sandin is secretary, is, much to our regret, not being patronised as it should, whether for the want of enthusiasm or thought, or a don't-care-a-hang disposition on the part of those who should readily come forward, or the willing ones waiting to be called upon persoaally by a friendly canvasser, we know not, but we can safely say that the object aimed at, namely to raise funds for the purchase of an aeroplane for the Allies, is a most laudable one.
Three liberal spirits at the receDt meeting held (Messrs C. G. Sandin, A. J. Hill, and Jas. McLeod), came forward with a guinea each, and that is all, so far, there is upon the list. If a person were appointed to take the list round, we feel confident that a goodly sum of money would soon be collected. About three thousand pounds is all that is required for an aeroplane, and Whangarei Northwards is doing splendidly so far. Helensville should do its little bit towards the object in view. One can scarcely conceive what an amount of damage an aeroplane from the North might do the enemy, and the encouragement it would give our boys at the front to know that we are always thinking of them and willing to help them in every way in this disastrous war.
It has coinn to our knowledge that Helensvillc shows v little jealousy at times in the matter of its leaders. There are some of its residents who will not take up the running themselves ii Hr charitable or patriolic movement is aclyanqeu 1, and sneer at others doing their duty.^ Instead of there being a spirit of high-mindedness, magnanimity and nobleness all around in oiij? mjdst, there are some who are prone to throw
cold water at the efforts made by their compeers, instead of working in harmony and good fellowship, esdecially in these wretched war times and need of unanimity. No wonder the dogs howl when there is dissension w rhere there ought to be ** brotherly love."
