THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE." HELENSVILLE, THURSDAY, April 20, 1916 GATHERING THE BOTTLES.
WHAT ABOUT A BOTTLE DAY?
There have been many devices to raise funds for wounded soldiers, and they are still going. But before it is too late, and as another innovation, why not let us-have " A Bottle Day ?" Not for full bottles, but for "empties." At a rough estimate we should say that if all the empties or "dead marines " in the Dominion were gathered up and sold about five thousand pounds would be added to the patriotic or any other fund. Go where you will, empties are to be found in every nook and corner of one's allotment —bar ours—in the household, on the balconies, or in the cellars, along the highways and in the by-ways, and, don't let us forget the large tracks of the railways, along which, especially the main trunks, thousands of bottles are strewn promiscuously. Those in the backyards of hotels are not mentioned because they are private property. Yet probably publicans would contribute many, many dozens, even if they only had to buy them back again. Bottles of every description are going up in price, and we are only dealing with them as refuse which might be easily turned into cash. The trouble would be to "gather 'em in," Mrßottleman !
