FLASHES

The enemy haye torpedoed about eight British steamers during the past week.

We learn that Mr E. H. Cucksey is seriously ill in Auckland, having undergone a surgical operation.

A vessel which arrived in Auckland this week brought 339 wounded and invalided soldiers, 88 of whom were from the Auckland district.

Conversing in a shop the other day, one lady said to the other : " I notice Mr MacKenzie has Hopmeier in his garden to-day." "Yes," said the other, in inte resting surprise," and what sort of a plant is that ?"

It is said that the line fishermen of Helensville are in for a bad time, owing to the Auckland market being flooded with the produce of the trawlers. But *et us hope for the best.

A. letter from one of the young Becrofts situate in some part of Europe or Asia, states : "We are all in good fettle, and getting over the measles; anxiously awaiting to meet the enemy, and hope for a good time."

Our sporting settler, Mr E. H. Cucksey of Parakai, made two popular wins with his b.g Cliye at the late Otahuhu Trotting Meeting; and also pulled off a second with his b.h Huon Patch.

It is an education for your children — if fortunate enough to possess any—to get them to read over the accounts in detail as received from the butcher, baker, storekeeper, and candlestickmaker. A puzzle in euclid is not half the wonderful result.

So far as paint and colour of the Helensville Court House is concerned, though a wooden structure and approaching sixty years of age, is looking quite spic-and-span. It is now time the Justice Depsrtment re-placed the ancient post and wire fence with a decent picketfence all round the allotment, to make it secure and up-to-date.

"On the Russian Frontier," a drama dealing with Russia's part in the great war, heads the programme at the Star Theatre to-morrow (Friday night) The opening scenes of this engrossing story of love, war, and heroism are laid in and round an inn at Lublitz, on the frontier, and the whole drama is intensely interesting. Saturday's programme at the same Theatre will include an irresistible comedy drama "The Butterfly," and "Added Fuel " is another drama of compelling interest, while a Pathe War Gazette, latest Topical Budget, clever cartoons, and a couple of laughable comics fill the bill. On Wednesday another good programme will be screened, the chief attraction of which is " The Attorney for the Defence," a drama of more than usual importance, the theme of which (ambition v. justice) has been cleverly treated.
