THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE." HELENSVILLE, THURSDAY, Feb. 24, 1916 LIME AND ITS VALUE
Is. the absence of a local Chamber of Commerce, the Echo thinks it up to the Helensville Agricultural and Pastoral Association to take up the question of procuring adequate supplies of lime for the farmers, and approach the head of the Government Agricultural Department on the matter. The whole of the North is well-known to possess very large deposits of limestone wherever it is sought, and yet lime as a fertiliser for the miles of hungry land and crops is so scarce an agricultural commodity as to be almost unknown npon many farms absolutely starving for the want of its most essential help to the hungry lands—lime—principally because of its almost prohibitive cost, which is about 4Us per ton, instead of, say, 12s 6d. Numerous articles are continually appearing in the Press on the merits of lime for poor land or raising good crops, and the Agricultural Department is continually saying a lot on its great potentialities and how to use it*j yet no attempt is made to help the settler procure plentiful supplies of lime at a reasonable figure. A scarcity of lime in any district is one of the greatest drawbacks the farjmer has to contend with, and without it his land is becoming poorer and more impoverished every year, yet the raw material is almost in his near vicinity, no matter where his plot may be. Settlers could easily help themselves to lime if tjiey would only put their teads together and get Government .on the job to locate deposits of limestone, etc.
