Withdrawal from Anzac—Men and
Guns Safely Removed—Allies hold South of Gallipolli—Two-to-one ' Down
The dramatic announcement is made that the troops in the Suvla and Anzac sectors at Gallipoli have been withdrawn. This delicate operation was conducted , with great skill, and the -embarkation was carried out under the best conditions and without molestation by the Turks, who ■did not know what was taking place. Men, guns, and stores were safely transferred.
- General Townshend estimates that the Turks lost 25,000 in their 'attacks on the British during the retirement in Mesopotamia and in subsequent attacks on Kut-el-Amara.
A feature of operations on the western front on Monday was an attempt by the enemy to prevent British airmen making reconnaissances. Forty-four air combats took place, with the result that two enemy machines were brought down, and one British machine is missing.
It is estimated that the Italians are detaining more than 500,000 Austrians and Hungarians on their front. , .
