A member of the Hungarian Parliament informed a correspondent of the London Morning Post that the Hungarian losses are 100,000 a month. Unless the war ends early next year Austria and Hungary will be exhausted.
Mrs A. E. Harding desires to tender her hearty thanks to all the people of the North of Auckland, who put such a splendid sum in the recent Carnival contest in aid of our sick and wounded soldiers. Mrs Harding appreciates most keenly the loyal support, whole-hearted giving, and self-sacrificing effort which has characterised the whole of her campaign in the North, and again thanks her supporters for the great honour they bestowed on her in choosing her as Queen of the North in the Provincial
Carnival
Farmers on the coast (Taranaki) are greatly concerned over the obligation to supply returns for war tax purposes. They point out that they are asked to furnish an accurate statement of their incomes, etc., since March 31, 1914. under a penalty of £100, and this they cannot comply with, as they have not kept books. The Taranaki executive of the Farmers' Union has taken the matter up, and on Saturday an indignation meeting is to be held under that body's auspices. Resolutions of protest were submitted for conveyance to the Minister for Finance and'to the Prime Minister.
In the Otamatea County the sum of £22,000 is being spent to construct a new road from the recently-built railway station at Paparoa, on the North Auckland Main Trunk Railway, to Ruawai, on the Northern Wairoa River. Money is also being spent on smaller roads made to open up the country and to give greater facilities to settlers to connect with the new railway service. The train now runs to Huarau, in the Otamatea County. The Hobson County Council is also alive to the needs of the settlers, and, in conjuction with the Whangarei County Council, is spending money in the direction of improving the road between Whangarei and Dargaville.
