A MOCK COURT AT HELENSVILLE

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1915

A MOCK COURT, in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, was held in the Helensville Theatre on the above date. The public turned up well, and a big charge list was dealt with. && Mr Hall-Skelton acted asjirojM Judge ; Mr Hammond as Clerk oij the Court; Mr C* Sandin as" Judge's Advocate ; Mr E. T. Field appeared for defendants ; and the Police were represented by Messrs H. Graham, T, Dwerryhouse and J. Bradly. The jury, consisting of 12 ladies; with Mrs A. Lambert as forewoman, were empanelled.

The first case was that of Mr G-crdon Coates, M.P. —Charged with being a Member of Parliament and travelling on the railway without a ticket. Fined £5 ss, His Honor remarking that Members must be taught a lesson.

Carl Sandin —Charged with being the father of a large family^ was fined £2 2s.

W. Allen —Charged with selling methylated spirits for whisky, was firied £1. ■

Henry White —Charged with running steamers in opposition to the Railway Department, was fined £1 Is.

Francis Mackenzie — Charged with, failing to appear in kilts and whilst being a printer did play with the devil, was fined £2. G. Bennett —With selling fish without a license, was fined 155.;

Geo. Watt, publican—For not remaining as a constable, was fined £2 2s.

G. Murphy—With having a name like Murphy and bribing the jury, fined £2 2s.

Jas. Stewart —For racing on the Show Ground, fined £6 6s.

Jas. McLeod —For attending a public meeting and refusing to open his mouth, was fined £4 4s.

Tui McEwin—For not breaking down his whisky, fined £3.35. D. Ross—For driving cattle along the bed of the river to the danger of navigation, fined £1 Is. W. Cullens—For being drunk at the Sports, was fined ss, and sentenced to go to Servia.

Jas. Hand —For winning two horse races in a day, fined £5 ss. A. Bishop—For being a Bishop and not supplying his flock's spiritual needs, fined £7 17s 6d.
