FROM THE FRONT

WELCOME HOME TO •PTE. HOWHE DRINNAN

A SOCIAL was given to Private Howie Drinnan on Wednesday evening in the Hall at Kaukapakapa. He returned by the Willochra, having been wounded at the Dardanelles. He was there a fortnight when he became disabled, and enteric ensued. The largo gathering showed the great patriotism of Kaukapakapa, and also how welcome home was Private Drinnan. Mr F. Dye presided, and worked hard to make the function a success. After the welcomehome address, the outburst of hearty cheering for one and all the soldieis, expressed the deep feeling of that British audience. Song, " Hearts of Oak," Mrs Goodwin'; song, " Happy Song," encore " Invitation," Miss Waddell; recitation, " Wbat are you doing for Them," encore "Wreck of the Drake," Mrs C. Smith; song, " Morning and You," encore "Little Grey Home of the West," Mrs H. Bellini; song, " Mary of Argyle," encore " The Irish Boy," Mr C. W. Smith ; duet (in costume), " Our little Farm," Misses. Wardell and Hardy, heartily encored. Excellent refreshments, provided by the ladies, were handed round. Dancing was indulged in by some, while many ladies knitted for our soldiers boys, and altogether a very pleasant envening was spent.

Corporal W. A. Drinnan was present, but he is far from well yet, and has now to go to Hospital for a month. — [Correspondent.]
