BRITISH APPEAL

FOR RED CROSS PURPOSES

TO THE EDITOR

I HAVE received a telegram from the Marquis of Lansdowne, informing me that in view of the growing demand both in France and the Near East it is necessary to made a general appeal for assistance in money for Red Cross purposes, and he has, therefore, asked me whether this Dominion will assist in company with all other dependenciss of the Crown in organising street and other collections throughout New Zealand on October 21. The money received from this general appeal will be devoted entirely to relieving our sick and wounded soldiers and sailors from Home and Ovei~ seas at the various seats of war. Lord Lansdowne goes on to say "from all parts of the King's Dominions we have already re" ceived generous assistance in our work, but with the increase of our forces at the front there is a corresponding increase in our expenditure, and we shall be truly grateful if you will help us by organising an appeal for the object which I have named. Their Majesties the King and Queen and H.M Queen Alexandra are giving us their gracious patronage, and I trust you will also be able to see your way to help us." I accordingly consulted my Ministers on the question and they concurred in the proposal to lay this telegram before the people of these islands while gladly according the patronage and support asked for by Lord Lansdowne, I desire to make it clear that this appeal emanates from the United Kingdom. 'No goods in kind are called for. All contributions should be sent to the Undei-Secretary for Internal Affairs, Wellington, and I will then according to instruction give directions for the amounts to be forwarded to St. John's Gate, London, while at the same time informing His Majesty the King.

LIVERPOOL, Governor, Wellington.
