Italy and Turkey—Formal Declara-
tion of War —British Submarine Lost —Attacked in Danish waters —Fall of Novo Gieorgievsk
It is reported from Constantinople that Italy has declared war against Turkey, and that the Italian Ambassador has left.
A British submarine, El 3, when on her way to the Baltic, became
stranded off the Danish island of
Saltholm. While efforts were being made to refloat her, a German destroyer arrived and fired on her, despite the fact that
she was in Danish waters
her position was hopeless, the Jmmander ordered the crew to \ndon her. The Germans con- ' tinned to fire on the men in the ■water, whereupon a Danish itorpedo-boat steamed between the submarine and the enemy, compelling the Germans to cease fire and to withdraw. Fifteen officers and men are reported to .have been saved, while 15 are miissing.
Two American passengers, who were aboard the White Star liner Arabic, which was sunk off the south coast of Ireland by a German submarine, remain unaccounted for. The American Ambassador in, Berlin will probably be directed to. call Geraaany's attention to the sinking •of the Arabic, and ask for an explanation. The Germans claim to have captured the fortress of Novo Georgia vsk, 19 miles north of Warsaw, with its garrison of .20,000 men and 700 guns.
