PATRIOTIC LOTTERIES
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,—l should like to draw your i attention to ?a paragraph in last ECHO which states that all -|l lotteries have been suspended by $' the Minister for Justice as being ■;- illegal and pending a decision remain so. Now, as quite a '.'"', number of Dargaville tickets ,have- -€* been sold here some of your -"^ readers may wonder what is to ~'-, become of their half-crowns, and others may be deterred from, purchasing and so helping what { is undoubtedly a good cause,, vizi, help for wounded soldiersMPl may state that all lotterielr in , - force for patriotic causes are to be continued to a finish, but on no account must new ones 'be started. SIR, —The Taumaruhui Patriotic Carnival Committee, at its last meeting, passed the following resolution, and- directed me to forward the same to you for publication, reqnesting your support.— " That the Government be asked not to enforce the Gaming and Lotteries Act during the present crisis, so as to enable art unions on a larger scale and with a wider scope of prizes, .to be held —always providing the sanction of the controlling body for patriotic funds be obtained— and the proceeds from the art unions are for patriotic purposes only."
