A large number of farmers were in Helensville yesterday, attending the Buckland and Son's monthly stock sale.

We learn that Mr George Hooper, of Makarau, has lately passed his examination by Dr. Phippin, and, in company with Mr K. White (who was for some time schoolmaster at Makarau), has joined the "Whangarei recruits.

The second son (Thomas William) of old identity T. W. Deacon, of Riverhead died at a private hospital in Auckland, on 3rd inst., at the age of 59. Father Deacon must be about 92 by this, and the family are well-known up this way. Much sympathy is felt for them.

Yesterday (Wednesday, August 4 th) was commemorated in the Churches all over the Dominion as the first anniyersary of the great European war. The ECHO trusts there will be no second anniversary, and that when peace is declared there will be a shilling or two left in order to 'shout' for Old England, King, Country, the Dominions and Helensville !

The Euchre and Dance, held in the Star Theatre, in aid of St. Matthew's Church Guild, on Monday evening last, Avas a decided success, the attendance being good. Mrs Carl Sandin won the ladies' prize, and Mr Rowles annexing that for the gentlemen's prize. The dance went merrily on until the wee sma' hours, a dainty supper being dispensed by the ladies at about 10 p.m.

Mr P. E. Ramsay's brother, who daily drives the firm's bakery cart, narrowly escaped a severe accident in Megson's Lane on Monday. The horse was ' coming out' on a nice trot when he got off the centre track and precipitated both driver, bread, and cart into the gutter, escaping most providentially from damage of any kind. The lane in question, a narrow one, deserves attention from the Town Board.
