THE GREAT FOOTPATH

SIR,—I was greatly amused, if not perturbed, on reading in your last issue a letter purporting to be signed by the ex-Chairman of the Helensville Town Board, in reference to the footpath from the railway fence to the Town Board offices, which has recently been coated with fine scoria ash, but I cannot for the life of me make out "what the writer is getting at when he refers to the footpath not being carried on a few yards further towards the bridge and so compelling traffic to cross over the road and, as it wore, divert custom from Megson's to Stewart's store. The little gap afore- s said is no detriment whatever to person continuing on, as they invariably do, (though another load of scoria would have completed the job), to the bridge and over it, as if' it were for pedestrians as well as for vehicles, and when negotiated, there the footpath of tar and sand continues right along past Megson's and up to the Bank corner. Mr McLeod's intentions may have been ever so good, but do what you may there is only one sure way of keeping the traffic on |the side of the road mentioned, and that is by the erection of another foot-bridge opposite the one existing, but it is useless talking of such a convenience until the Town Board is in a position to erect a sensible concrete bridge across the dirty, muddy creek, wide enough for foot traffic on either side and yehicle traffic in the centre. j Perhaps some day, when Mr McLeod is again a member of the Board, or even its chairman, we may see a decent approach made to our thriving township.—l am, etc.,
