In another column will be found a letter erninating from the Member for the District, Mr Gordon Coates, refuting in toto the statement made by the Northern Wairoa correspondent of the " btar " and recently republished by the Echo, insomuch that he, Mr Coates, favoured Dargaville in particular as* the;' site for the proposed saw-mill, so that the individual in question must be denounced as an arrant liar of the first degree. Strong termsto use, certainly, but such "must" be the case, if Mr Coates is telling the truth.

At any rate, the question at issue is a most serious one for Helensville, though Mr Coates does attempt to come out in the open by saying that—«it is only within the last \z months th.it your town (Helensville) has put in a claim, and only after the committee of gentlemen (meaning the Government Commission) went to Helensville to get evidence," This statement is certainly not a happy one for a Member to make, and shows that—if it is true —then he himself, although supposed to know all the advantages of a State saw-mill being inaugurated in Helensville, must have had a surprise on learning of our claims, and perhaps, we say perhaps, advisedly, • have fallen over a login reckoning that Dargaville was the hub of the universe— that there was no other alternative, since Helensville was asleep over the matter.

However, Mr Coates has now Helensville to reckon with, though he told (so he says), tbe people of Dargaville three years ago, "he favoured the erection of a mill" .in that township,
