THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO
Helensville, Thursday. July 15, 1915. MORE LIGHT FOR HELENSVILLE
With which is incorporated " The Kaipara Advertiser & Waitemata Chronicle."
The township during its dark hours presents a most deplorable and dangerous state of afltairs, more especially felt as we are supposed to be a progressive community gradually finding all conveniences and comforts for the well-being of those who live amongst us and those who are bound to increase in numbers with the growth of the place. It is therefore with pleasure we learn through the Town Board proceedings that a Mr T. Butcher, of Wellington, has approached the local body with an offer to light the town with cnal gas at the low charge of 6s 8d per 1000 cubic feet, a price considered favourable for any country township; while the rates for gas supplied to the public for lighting, cooking and power are 9s 2d, 7s 6d and 6s 8d per 1000 cubic feet respectively.
Since the Echo has been in existence we have always advocated the lighting of the town, but the Town Board being in low monetary circumstances, having borrowed largely for the purpose of giving the populace water and sewerage— which come before the luxury of gas-light at all times —it was hard to stir up public feeling in favour of further borrowing But now it appears as if the " dark '' situation was saved through the offer of thirty-years concession being given by the Town Board to Mr Butcher on the terms mentioned, and we trust that nothing will crop up to deter the speedy consummation of illuminating our dark highways and byways for all time.
