MAKARAU
[OWN CORRESPONDENT |
A son. of Mr Richards, of Glorit, met with a rather exciting adventure last week while driving home from .the station with a horse and trap. . When ascending the hill from the Makarau bridge the reins somehow became entangled, and in a moment the horse had backed over a steep bank, striking Mr Manuel's fence in the descent. A post was carried away and all the wires broken, the trap finally turning over, . and landing the horse on his back, where he remained firmly fixed. Fortunately the driver had jumped clear, and on calling loudly for help was heard by Messrs F. and H. Elvin, who were some distance away. They hurried to the scene of the accident, and, with the- assistance of the driver, the horse was soon released, and induced to rise to its feet, considerably shaken, but otherwise little the worse for its fall. A pig, enclosed in a crate (which of course turned upsidedown with the trap on top of it) rose cheerfully to its feet and commenced to feed through a hole in the crate.
