In Eastern Galicia, along the Dniester, the Russians have inflicted a severe defeat on the enemy. Large torces of the Austrians crossed the rivei\ and the Russians withheld their attack for a week. The attack, when delivered, was completely successful, the Austrian being hurled across the river, Cossacks are continuing the pursuit.

Hot fighting is proceeding along almost the whole of the western front. The Germans delivered a strong attack at Calonne, on the heights of the Meuse, and succeeded in regaining the second line of trenches they previously lost, but the Fiench by a counter attack again obtained a" footing on the dis puted ground.

The Russians are stoutly resisting the Germans along the Dniester, and are still fighting in the vicinity of Lemberg. Their tenacity is astonishing the Germans. An attack by strong enemy forces in the extreme north of Galicia, at the junction of the San and the Vistula, was repulsed.

There has been further violent fighting at Calonne,on the heights of the Meuse, where the French hold positions recently captured from the Germans. The enemy attacked with great determination, using inflammable liquid, and advancing under cover, of smoke. They were repulsed, however, after reaching their former lines.

North of Arras the Germans regained a footing on lost ground. A violent German attack in the Argonne was repulsed.

It is reported from Rome that Bulgaria is negotiating with the Entente Powers and Roumania, the negotiations with Turkey having broken down.

WEDNESDAY

Another raid on the German Zeppelin base at Friedrichaven, on Lake Constance, has been made by allied airmen. Eight bombs were dropped on the Zeppelin sheds. One of the airmen, owing to the failure of his engine, had to descend into Swiss territory.

A dual between a large German biplane driven by a pair of engines and a British machine took place at a height of 4000 ft above Poelcapelle, in Flanders.

Artillery combats are proceeding in the north of France.

The Germans are bombarding Arras with heavy guns.

An American correspondent with the German army describes the battle north of Arras as the greatest defensive struggle in the war. The German line, he states has been slightly bent by the battering-ram like attacks of General Joffre, but it still unbroken.

The Italians have invaded Trentino, south of Riva. Alpine troops, after a night march, destroyed the power station serving Riva, plunging the town into darkness.

The latest reports from the eastern theatre indicate that the Russians are successfully holding the line of the Vistula north of its confluence with the San, in the extreme south of Poland, though they are falling back in the north of Galicia.

French Stand—activity of Montenegrins

Details of fighting at Krithia, on the Gallipoli Peninsula, show that though outnumbered by three to one, and under a deadly fire from machine guns, the British carried all before them, gaining 500 yds. The message adds that Achi Baba can only be taken at the bayonet's point.

A British gunboat shelled Turkish towns on the coast of Smyrna, destroying a petroleum depot and a house stored with ammunition.

A desperate effort by the Germans to regain the ground lost to the French in the region of Metzeral, in Alsace, has been successfully resisted by the French.

The Montenegrins have occupied Scutari, in the north of Albania.

The Russians report that great forces of the enemy are advancing in the Lublin district, across the north frontier of G-alicia.
