RETURN OF MR JENNINGS The by-election for the Taumarunui seat, recently declared vacant through electioneering formalities last December, came off on Tuesday, the result being that the old campaigner (Mr W. T. Jennings), printer, and intimate friend of the ECHO'S editor, polled 149 over the Government candidate (Mr C. K. Wilson) thus: Mr Jennings (Opposition) ... 3850 Mr Wilson (Government) ... 3701 Majority for Mr Jennings ... 149 This leaves the parties— Government ... ... ... |i Opposition ... ... ... 39 So that when the. Speaker is elected from the former, Mr Massey will have a majority of but one. The Hon. Mr Massey is reported to have said, after the contest—"lt will now remain for the Opposition Party to show whether it is anxious to force another general election on the country or not." We scarcely think anyone is foolish enough to move in the House such an injudicious proposition, still no one side should be taunted.
