Two French Successes-Capture of Neuville—Advance in LorraineGerman Submarine Sunk

"lhe French have captured the remaining houses in Neuville bt. Vaast, north of Arras, and%e entire village, which for several weeks has been defended by the Germans house by house, is now m their possession. " The labyrinth/ which iies .to the east of .Neuville, is being vigorously attacked by the French, who have gained ground.

A French success is also rePjrted in, the Bois le Petre, west of Ponp(|ousson, near Lorraine frontier, where German trenches have been captured.

Mr A. J. Balfour, the.new First Lord of the Admiralty, announced in Parliament that a German submarine had' been sunk, and that six officers and the crew of 21 had been taken prisoners.

• The Russians announce that the Germans in the Baltic provinces have been re-inforced. The Russians are concentrating before Shavli, 75 miles south of Riga.

By the occupation of Monfalcone, in the Gulf of Trieste, the Italians are reported to have driven a wedge through the Austrian centre, and are now threatening the enemy with envelopment. They are now within 17 miles of Trieste.

On the formidable passes of the Dolomites the Italians have gained further notable successes. An important Austrian fortress, in the south of Trentino, near Rovereto, which took four years to construct, was found to have been wrecked and abandoned by the enemy. The guns had been sent to Galicia earlier in the war.

Ah Italian force has been landed at the Albanian port of Medua, in the Adriatic, on account of vessels containing food destined for Montenegro having been looted by the Malissori tribesmen.

Two British torpedo boats, while operating off the east coast of England, were torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine.

Important successes have been achieved by the Russians along the Dniester, in Middle Galicia. The command of both banks of the River has been regained, and the German advance on Lemberg has been checked. . The Germans suffered heavy losses in vain assaults on the Russian front before Shavli.

The French have consolidated their recent gains north of Arras and north of Albert. They made a great haul of war material abandoned by the Germans at Neuville St. Vaast.

The Germans, in a vigorous attack on the Belgian advance posts at Dixmunde, succeeded in crosssng the Yser, but were driven back by allied reinforcements, which included a British regiment.

The^ftalians have made progresdP* at various points in Austrian territory.

Reports from the Dardanelles describe how a small force of New Zealanders captured a Turkish trench. The men were subjected to heavy counterattacks, but held their own with the greatest gallantry.

Advices from Udine, in North Italy state that the Italian attack on the Austrian fortress of Gorz, on the Isonzo, which has been described as the key to Trieste, has begun. The Italians are bombarding the environs of the town and the Austrian positions on the neighbouring hills. Worth of Gorz the Italians, by a sudden attach, succeeded in capturing the town of Plava. ' Heavy fighting is reported from Petroffrad along the whole eastern front from the Baltic to

Bukovina. Strong German attacks in Poland and Galicia have been repulsed.

The recent German reverse south of Lemberg resulted in the Russians capturing nearly 16,000 officers and men and a great quantity of munitions and transport vehicles.

The French carried by assault a strongly-fortified ridge north of the s.ugar refinery at Souchez. In an attack north of Albert, French infantry in a single charge carried three German trenches.

WEDNESDAY

At the Dardanelles—Slow but Sure Progress — Italian Advance on Austria—Bombarding a Fortress A message from Athens states that the allies position at the Dardanelles continues materially to improve. The New Zealanders and Australians hold an impregnable position dominating Maidos and Kilid Bahr. The Turks still occupy the village of Krithia, in the southern ex tremity of the peninsula, which offers a strong position.

The Turkish port of Chesme, west of Symrna, has been bombarded by two French destroyers. Sailing vessels in the harbour were sunk and petrol stores destroyed.

It is reported from. Bucharest that Austrians have landed at San Giovanni, in the' north of Albania, and have distributed arms and money to the Albanians.

The French have made further progress north of Arras.

The Italians have begun to bombard the important Austrian fortress of Malborgetto, which guards one of the principal Alpine roads from Italy to Austria, through the Carnic Alps.

THURSDAY

Successful Air Raid—A Shower of French Bombs—Great Battle in Flanders

An effective reprisal for German attacks on undefended towns has been inflicted by a French air squadron, numbering 23 aeroplanes, which dropped 130 projectiles on the" castle,' arms factory, and railway station of Karlsruhe, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Baden.

Reports from Rotterdam state that a great battle is in progress on the Flanders front, between the coast and Steenstraate. The Fiench have gained some ground near Dixmunde.

The Government Press Bureau reports that the situation on the Gallipoli Peninsula has developed into trench warfare.
