MEN, WAKE UP!

[Contributed]

A parade of the Kaipara Rifle Club was called for Saturday, sth inst. Eight men turned up and the two inspecting officers (Capt. Turley and Lieut. White). This was an insufficient number, so the parade was postponed and some firing practice substituted. There were counter-attractions in golf, horse races in Auckland, etc.

Have Helensville men no realisation of the gravity of the present situation, just because they do not see burnt and destroyed houses, railways, etc., and their'wives and children are alive and safe ? Are they going to continue thus selfishly to_ decline to allow their pleasures and pastimes to be interfered with, whilst our brave lads are being shot down in France and the Dardanelles ?

Perhaps the members of the Rifle Club are not aware of the fact that, under the' Defence regulations, absentees from parades, without excuse, are liable to fine or imprisonment; and it may be necessary for more drastic measures to be taken to ensure better attendance.

The uniforms are now "to hand and it is to be hoped the men will attend more regularly and punctually. There will be evening parade on Thursday next, and on Saturday afternoon.
