BAY OF ISLANDS ELECTION

LARGE MAJORITY FOR

Wm. STEWART

THE ECHO was quite prepared to see Mr Wm. Stewart win the election for Bay of Islands seat on Tuesday, by a substantial majority, but, owing to the state of parties and the many who have " changed their colour " of late, it was scarcely to be expected he would walk in with such flying colours—a majority of over one thousand—which goes to show conclusively that the seat held for so Inany years by the late Robert Morrow Houston, as a straight-out Liberal, has now turned into a Reform electorate by a very large Mr Stewart, who will make an energetic xiember, is to be congratulated, while Mr G. G.1 Menzies of Rawene, is to be commended for his plucky fight. The following are the completed returns.: — W. Stewart (Government) 3217 G. G. Menzies (Opposition) 2216

Majority for Mr Stewart 1001
