Attack on Achi Baba—New Zea-

landers engaged — Battleship Triumph Sunk—Torpedoed off Gallipoli.

A long cable message has been received from the Secretary of State for the Colonies, detailing the operations on the Gallipoli Peninsula from May 6 to May 19. A considerable portion of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps was transferred from Gaba Tepe to take part in the attack on the formidable fortress of Achi Baba, the colonial troops regaining at Sari Bair repulsed v^^Jfce attacks by the Turks. Men of"the New Zealand and Australian mounted regiments have arrived on the peninsula, having volunteered to serve on foot in support of their .comrades.

A message from Paris states that an attack by two divisions of the First Turkish Army Corps, which, is described as the flower of the Turkish Army, on the Australasian positions on May 18, was completely beaten.

The British battleship Triumph (11,800 tons) was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine off the Gallipoli Peninsula, while supporting the New Zealand and Australian forces. The Triumph is the fourth British battleship to be sunk in the Dardanelles operations.

The Germans are making desperate efforts to regain ground lost to the British and French along the Arras-La Bassee front.

The Italians are attacking at many points along the Austrian frontier, and have gairied possession of several of the mountain passes. An Italian aeroplane dropped bombs on Monfalcone, a few miles north-west of Trieste. The King has taken command of the army.
